To the people that knows me well, this blog entry is just up my alley. I spent a lot of my time thinking about this and in fact one could argue too much. But hey, if you don’t have extreme field experts, to whom would you address a specific customer question from a Help-Desk?
It’s of course hot keys, or shortcuts if you will, on any software suite or operating system out there – its my mission to know all shortcuts ever implemented and tell the world about it.
However; for now I will direct my focus to our new, but rapidly growing, baby of e-conomic: The Datagrid of book keeping.
Global navigation of all grid- and formviews.
All grids have the same basic functionality when it comes to navigation, this list will take you through most of them. Data in all grids can at any point in time be saved using shortkey Ctrl+shft+S.
Looking above all grids, we added a menu of shortcuts to access all journals currently available. Start by pressing Ctrl+Shft+M, followed by a number of 1–9 to enable the journal of your choice.
Navigating the gridview using the arrow keys
Moving around inside the grid can easily be achieved by using your standard arrow keys found on your keyboard. The active column is changed by pressing the Left or Right key.
An indication of what row, or entry if you like, is active should be visible to the untrained eye and can be changed by pressing the Up or Down key.
For all input boxes with a dropdown implementation its possible to open up a lookup grid for that specific range of data. Cant find your favourite bank account, press Ctrl+Shft+O and filter out the unwanted entries.
Navigating the gridview using the Tab key
As an advanced user, you can change the view of the grid to only contain a few of your favorite columns. This can be achieved by pressing the profile edit button and then remove or insert desired or undesirable columns. Note: You won’t loose your precious data by hiding any columns. After your selection of columns has been implemented it’s time to look at the powers of the Tab key. Actually I was hoping to build up a lot of excitement here, but this is plain as clear sky.
Insert your data for each column and press the Tab key to move to the next available input box. Great for inputting a lot of data fast as you don’t have to lift your hands from the keyboard.
Repeat this and you’ll eventually find yourself at the last column; pressing the Tab once again will create a new entry.
Navigating the formview
Jump to the formview by pressing Ctrl + Enter. Note: Pressing once more will take you back to the gridview again. Especially useful if your favourite column list has excluded that one specific input box that only has content ever so rarely.
The arrows will take you to all desired input boxes. However; it may be more convenient to use the Ctrl+Left or Ctrl+Right Arrow to jump from one inner window to the next. Try it out and see if it works for you.
Flipping through each entry in Formview, can be achieved by pressing PageUp or PageDown.
Adding and removing an entry
Instead of reaching for the mouse and look for that button on top of the screen to add another entry, try pressing Insert on your keyboard. The Grid will then create a new entry and place the cursor in the first column, ready to type.
To delete the active entry, press Ctrl+Shft+D – the system will then ask you, if you are all right with this. If so, answer yes!
Removing multiple entries
Mark unwanted entries by selecting each entry in the checkbox column using Space and press Ctrl+Shft+D to remove them. An alert will appear to where thou must agree.
Accessing the Filter row and the lineinfo bar
All grids have the ability to sort and filter your entries, thus make it easier to find that specific entry or just to get an general summary of a certain range. To get there press Ctrl+Arrow up. Input your filter specifications and press Tab to activate the filter.
The Lineinfo is intended for information to better understand the entry like the name of the selected bank account, but not necessarily for input. In reality the lineinfo bar can include anything you like and its up to you to use it the way you like. Getting there is easy by pressing Ctrl+Shft+Down Arrow.
Undo using Esc
Using the The Undo button can result in some different behaviour depending on how many changes you have done. While inputting your data hitting the Esc once will undo what you have written in that particular box; hitting the undo once more, will roll back all changes for that specific entry and render the entry unchanged.
– Any newly created entry will be removed upon the second activation of Undo.
Journal specific shortcuts.
Book one or more Journal entries Ctrl+shft+1
While working in a Journal there are some extra options available. To book one or more rows make sure they are checked, unless you are only booking the active entry. Press Ctrl+shft+1 to book them. Press accept on popup up.
